The original A Turtle With an Elephant on its Back Carrying the World was a small drawing I made back in 2003. I was reading a book that talked about how a Hindu sees the world as being carried on the back of an elephant on the back of a turtle, which I thought was a really interesting concept. I immediately wrote this down and drew a thumbnail sketch to reinforce the reminder.

I wanted to use the enthusiasm of the original sketch when the time came to make it into a painting. I liked the sketch so much that I ended up doing nothing more than making the sketch the painting itself … I thought it was kind of funny that a tiny drawing became a large work on canvas. I completed the painting in 2012 and it sold earlier this year.
