Winged Victory: Small and Large Works on Paper by Jason Oliva

Winged Victory of Samothrace. 2010. Acrylic on Canvas.

Winged Victory of Samothrace Original Painting

I completed the above original painting, Winged Victory of Samothrace, in 2010. The inspiration behind this work is mostly concerned with how many of the ancient Greek and Roman sculptures we see in today’s museums are white. However, when originally sculpted, the details of these sculptures, like the clothing, the sandals and the irises of the eyes, were often painted. This work is my personal interpretation of how the original sculpture, ‘Winged Victory of Samothrace’ (C.190 BC), may have first appeared.
