I have recently finished two portrait commissions. I really enjoyed painting them. They are quite a departure from the standard bust or full length type of portrait. But that’s the point, a portrait can be whatever you want it to be.
For past portrait commissions I have usually gathered my own photo reference material via a photo shoot and for some, I used the photo-booth in the basement of “Bubby’s” in Tribeca. Living in England changes the process somewhat. I now work directly with the commissioner to gather these materials; a few drawings are exchanged via the net or post and once everything is agreed upon, the paintings are made. Its a great formula and seems to work well for both parties.
